This map layer documents the number of non-military events—in five categories according to frequency—in which chemical warfare agents were used between 1970 and 2017.

The Global Terrorism Database - GTD offers an overview of acts of terrorism that are based on a deliberate act of violence by a civilian and that fulfil two of three further criteria:

  • Criterion 1: The act must be aimed at attaining a political, economic, religious, or social goal.
  • Criterion 2: There must be evidence of an intention to coerce, intimidate, or convey some other message to a larger audience (or audiences) than the immediate victims.
  • Criterion 3: The action must be outside the context of legitimate warfare activities.
